Design is meticulous to stay true to the company's mission.
My design approach focuses on creating innovative solutions to improve design standards. My design process starts with research, competitive analysis, mind-map, content audit, and thumbnails. Lastly, I develop the final designs in either Illustrator or InDesign.
City of Fargo
bridge design
I was hired to design an overpass bridge, railing system, and lighting for the city of Fargo while collaborating with engineers and a 3D artist. The bridge is the first overpass when entering the city, so the concept articulated the many cultures and languages within the area through the expression of sound waves. We developed the concept through user testing and research.
Press Club
menu design
Press Club, a wine bar and lounge, offers California’s finest wines and beers in a sophisticated social atmosphere. Press Club is one of San Francisco’s most notable destinations.
The menu design was styled after Art Deco with detailed titles contrasted with the clean organization of the wine descriptions and naming conventions.
Bakkegard Ancestor Book
book and infograph design
This 300 page ancestor book traces the history of three women and their family tree. The frontmatter and backmatter is filled with infographs, charts, table of contents, and an index page. It is a hard cover book wrapped in linen bookcloth and professionally bound using smyth-sewn binding.
The infographs illustrate the migration from Europe to the United States and the births and deaths of each individual family member. Letters, legal documents, timelines, and photographs are included in the book.
University of North Dakota
marketing design
The B.F.A. in Graphic Design and New Art Media at UND is the only program in the state that teaches graphic, UX/UI, and letterpress design.
My job as creative director to the Art & Design Department was to manage a team of designers, create and maintain the department website, design advertisments, design catalogues, and create event and marketing material.
Charlie and Catalina the Cat
illustration and book design
Charlie and Catalina the Cat is an adventure alphabet book teaching children the sounds of the alphabet and how to read by Montessori standards.
The illustrations were drawn by hand and then scanned and placed in Illustrator. The drawings were then traced with the pencil and pen tools. Multiple layers were used to create the level of detail in shadowing and dimension.
Showcased are the illustrations for Catalina.
Verbal Exchanges
bfk paper scroll and stitched type
This stitched type on Reeves BFK scroll paper combines women’s craft and typography. Simple communication from mother to daughter can dramatically shape a girl’s identity. The scroll illustrates the weight on a mother’s shoulder to adhere to societal norms that may directly or indirectly be transferred to her daughter through speech. This concept is articulated using common phrases women say to their daughters with Bodoni’s thin to thick font styles. The typeface becomes heavier and the leading tighter as the words flow down the five-foot scroll paper. This piece won second place at the Rourke Art Museum.
